Our Proserpina series was created for Femaissances second show titled "Proserpina".
Proserpina is a Roman goddess who was raped and taken against her will into the Underworld by Pluto. Her mother, unaware of Proserpina’s location, set for all the fruit and vegetables in the world to stop growing. As life on the surface withered, Pluto was forced to release Proserpina. Before letting her go, he deceived her into eating six pomegranate seeds so she would have to live six months of each year with him. Thus they say, Proserpina represents the change in seasons. Her descent into the Underworld plunges the world into a cold dark place, while her ascension brings growth and light into the world.
Our pieces use this myth to explore various concepts of fertility, duality, and suspension. With no value of her own and a rape that bore no consequences, Proserpina seems like a timely figure in the era of #MeToo
